On Oct. 13, 14, and 15, the Beyond the Bars LA Fellows and Justice Work Group at UCLA held their first conference: Beyond the Bars LA: The End of Mass Incarceration. The conference organizers hoped to connect “community organizations, activists, policy makers, researchers, students and those directly impacted by issues of incarceration from across the nation.
As a feminist, Adilene doesn’t want anyone’s dreams, ambitions, and self-expression to be limited by gender roles and gender expectations: “It’s a thing that’s imposed on us, and we have every right to break from it.”
To celebrate National Coming Out Day the Queer Alliance has organized an unofficial National Coming Out Week, from Monday, Oct. 9 to Thursday, Oct. 12, which includes numerous events celebrating LGBTQ+ heroes, history, representation, and education.
Sex education has the ability to give people of all genders and sexualities control of their bodies, and show them when their autonomy is being violated.
Speakers at the symposium discussed the likely future of state climate policy under Trump and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Scott Pruitt.
“The majority of my life I had to fight tooth and nail with my dad to say ‘Hey, shoulders aren’t sexual. I should be allowed to wear tank tops in 80 degree heat,’” Suthar said. “Now I don’t owe anyone an explanation and there’s no one stopping me.”
Dey’s contributions to feminism, whether by her daily actions or her professional work, advance the scope of the movement for all people by seeking to give them agency through education and awareness.
“Feminism is about accepting and acknowledging difference in people not in an attempt for equality but for equity. Equality looks different to different people, and I think instead of trying to be equal, we can actually recognize, talk through, and embrace our differences.”
“Since becoming a producer for HOOLIGAN, it has been a prominent goal of mine to create more spaces where us minorities can succeed, simply by choosing more shows that centered around a minority group or had an ambiguous storyline that didn’t require a white person as the lead.”
TEDxUCLA facilitates a space of diverse knowledge production where speakers, coordinators, and audience members are able to come together and collaborate in the interest of promoting a positive learning environment, and spreading the love of learning that so many of us have lost.
