UC Santa Barbara Student Sexually Assaulted and Beaten

A 19-year-old UC Santa Barbara student was gang raped and beaten some time between the hours of 12:30 and 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. The incident occurred in densely-populated Isla Vista, where more than 60 percent of UCSB students reside. Although the woman reported the rape to her roommate and authorities after and there were subsequent searches of the area, no arrests have been made.

This is the second case of sexual assault at UCSB in as many months, and although it is not uncommon for sexual assaults to happen in the Isla Vista area, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover, “this case is extreme. To have a victim assaulted by several suspects is horrible.” UCSB Police Sgt. Robert Romero called the incident “horrendous.”
